over a year

So it has been quite sometime since I last posted, not that anyone really will read this, but for those of you here reading here are some different pieces of my process work I have found. I am tired, I'll put them up tomorrow.

Spaceman 2.0

"I am floating towards the nothing" Is inspired by the lyrics from the same song as the previous spaceman print but only a different portion of it. The actual lyrics are:
"
I am floating towards the sun.
The sun of nothing."

The whole song is about the character trying to find his way back to his home planet. Floating towards the next sun, trying to find it, he describes the sense of absolute loneliness as being like 'a planet on his own' his own planet, with no home. I really related to this sense of being lost looking for a planet to call home, I don't feel like I'm there, but I'll keep floating to the next sun, hopefully finding a place that suits me.

Spaceman 2.0 has been made and is available as an Epson print for $30 plus S&H or print trade. It is the second in the spaceman series and I think is an improvement to the first version. In fact I will be reworking the first one in this style so that the series will be more cohesive. The prints are on paper that is 22x15 with a print area of 13x20. They are available on BFK Reives White, Grey, and Creame, as well as a Fabriano Heavyweight White. Scans and photos of all of these as well as various color temperature shifts will be posted soon, so keep checking back.

now with stars and colors

and now... with even more colors, I think just really annoy everyone I'll post all the separations too

oh yeah and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know what you think

Spaceman B&W

Here is the spaceman illustration I have done for my final critique, it will be 3-4 color screen printed with, "SPACEMAN", across the top and then at the bottom,"...that's what they say I am." (text is a song lyric from the song 'Sun of Nothing" by Between The Buried and Me . Stars and possibly a moon in the background. Still developing for instance, his eye appears to have exploded so his eye will have exploded, this is what I want the black, key, layer to look like and I want the black to provide all the tone for the color areas. I will post a new picture once I do an approximate coloring and also add stars to the backdrop and that possible moon.

Project Book Day 1

So I got a new sketch book/journal the other day and I got a journal sized one based on the advice of an old friend, oh and its red and has a string to mark the page. Today I decided to make a project of it, so here is the introduction page of it, it will explain a lot .

Maybe if its decent enough I'll make a small edition to give as gifts.

Here is the first drawing made.

-Micron and Colored Pencil

Second Drawing

-Micron

On this one I was thinking of cutting the eyes out and having
a creepy drawing on the next page so it lines up with the eyes.
Also I want to do another face drawing on the back of this page
so that the eyes line up again with another creepy image.
Feel free to comment with any ideas for the eyes.

Girl Ninja is Done!

So, pretty much the only thing I have gotten done so far this semester is an exchange portfolio project and this poster my roommate Brendan (an illustrator here at MECA) illustrated and I printed, and although it turned out much different from the original image, I think we are both pleased with the run as objects which is kind of what I have thought they were going to be all along. I am excited because its by far the most complicated project I have done(9-10 layers, 7 colors) and will do for a while. It was hard registering the prints properly and getting the inks to print solidly was something I knew was going to be challenging, but through some testing and experimenting with different additives to the ink as well as changing the way I was flooding and printing helped. So now that they are done I will be putting them up for sale on Etsy.com next week. I will link to my store when they are up. Here are some scans of the prints, I hope to have some photos for the store, when I have those I will post those as well.

TIME TO POST

Greetings all, and I know there are many, I am here to announce that I will be posting again soon, just as soon as I get more process shots (a.k.a action shots). I am currently looking at the world plate full, or glass filled to capacity, anyways I am very busy right now, and hope to have some real live work to show for it soon! So keep checking and in no time flat, or two days there will be more for you to gander, hopefully more on the side of alot than little.

p.s. apologies for not posting since forever ago

Final Critique: Artist Statement

So to start my final critique, which I have decided to display on here as opposed to in person, I will begin with my artist statement, really more of a foreword.

Throughout the creation of this work my starting place was in constant flux. Few things were able to hold my interest strongly enough for me to carry them through the Fall and into the Spring. I was really interested in finding new materials for myself to work on in the fall (printing on wood, mod podge sheets, and plexi-glass). This opened up the world of papers to me and allowed me a little more agility with the way I could work that really propelled me into silk screen. What I'm getting at is that my "final project" is this blog. It is allowing me to reflect upon the past work and to translate it into a narrative of my junior year. The works are displayed in a semi-chronological order, with an overall emphasis on the Spring semester. Where needed some works are sequenced based upon my growth.

First Semester

So I have decided to start by showing a small selection of prints from last semester to start. I want to really focus reflecting and connecting where I was and where I am. Before my Junior review I felt like my work wasn't going in a direction, but sort of jumping tracks with out any real linear connection. However after looking at my work and discussing it, I saw a narrative, or the beginning and end of one. So I want to show you all my start this year and go from there.

- Bench I, xerox transfer on paper
- Bench II, Xerox transfer and watercolor on paper
- Bench III, Xerox transfer and acrylic on canvas

I feel like this work helped spark my insatiable appetite to for working and showed me that I could be ok with making pointless work, so long as I got something out of it. I began to explore material and what certain materials do to certain images. Particularly the next group of Images, starting with the diptic, the way the print sits in the canvas seemed really beautiful to me, and I really like the image paired with the canvas as the ground.

- Untitled, Lithography on Canvas,

This print stood out from the series it was in because of the canvas and the way the ink reacted to the canvas and vise versa.

This reaction to the materials was something that was still developing for me as pushed through and start to appreciate the way ink sits in or on the material. This was helpful to me because I began to appreciate paper and see that there was a potential of there being something worth searching out in the Spring.

Spring Semester 1.1

This semester, my work became very modular and segmented. Most of that was due to stresses I was putting on myself. Pointless stresses really. So the overall ebb and flow of this semester was dictated by many deadlines. Between the Ireland exchange, Mongolia exchange, and Zine workshop, my first semester really became much more about meeting those deadlines. At the same time it was a relief to have the themes set out and to be able to purely focus on my reaction to them.

So to start, here is my Ireland exchange print, the theme was "Winners and Losers".

Top to bottom
- Loser written all over him (first layer) silk screen.
-
Loser written all over him, silk screen.

I used this project as a proof of my ability to register silkscreen and to maintain a consistent result for the Mongolia exchange.

This is my idea of one day, or this is what I did one day
.

- Untitled, Silk Screen

All the while these deadlines were looming there was a zine workshop on a Thursday and Friday that I was really looking forward to participating in so I had to make a deadline for myself on that project so that it wouldn't drag out and interfere with the two exchange editions. So, lacking any sleep at all, I pumped out twenty zines by sunday. I think the theme of "love for sale" really motivated because to be frank fuck love. Here it is in a more formal sort of book layout format.

- Love Re-Sold, Silk Screen

So once these deadlines were gone I just wanted to start making for myself.

Spring Semester 1.2

For the first time in the semester I now had a chance to really focus on my work. I felt like I was in a rut, so I decided to start making some fluff work. That has always been the key to me keeping me making, sometimes taking a break of a undetermined length from my body of work, and just start making stuff with no intent.

Here is where I spent the bulk of my time while printing. Just trying different things like drawing with India ink and alcohol, or woodblock etching, I just wanted to try stuff and really feel satisfied no matter the product that came from it.

Spring Semester 1.3

Now I want to show how this fluff work directed me towards a goal that I had been lazily moving towards. Printing the electric chair again but in a different aesthetic than I had previously. I had altered it by overlapping them, changing the scale, and added color to the environment, or by placing a figure in the chair. Up to this point I had not altered the actual chair itself. So I changed its aesthetic to a sort of anti-line drawing.

Beaming with Guilt, silkscreen

I was excited to see just how forgiving using transparent ink layers is, yet is very affective for creating that sort of clean line, even with light misprinting. I decided to throw in a few examples to show where my electric chair has been.

Texas Sized Sketch Book

In honor for my week long trip to visit my brother Doug in Austin TX, I have made a TEXAS SIZED SKETCH BOOK. It is 153 pages thick and comprises paper of many varieties, from heavy printmaking paper, to Bristol board, to graph paper, to a sketch vellum, and many more. The pages are 11" x 14" with a 11" x 12.5" usable area its pretty heavy too. So to sum it up, it's a beast.

General work

So here is some general work I have done this semester, really just focusing on techniques and craft more than concepts so there are some monoprints here, and some silk screening as well as the ink film that made the screens.

I'll start with some monoprints...

and now the ink film...

and the first shots at the screen prints from the ink film...

2 layers

3 layers

They are getting there, I need to reprint the first 2 layers with more transparent base in the ink on fresh paper.
The registration is ok, a little off but I will be using pins and tabs on my edition to ensure they print accurately.

more to come when I make them.

"Parental Proverbs"

This is the project I am working on for my major's studio, it involves memories of sayings that parents say that just sort of stick with you. I want to remove the context of the proverb and replace it with an image that kind of goes with the saying...

The project is still in it's very early stages of development, its a project I plane to work on for years and a half semester's time is not long enough for me to really flush any solid work out of it.

Anyways here is some of the concept work...

"Sit up straight" 1-3

The media for these are silk screen, monoprint, relief, and stencil.

the idea is exciting because it is open ended enough to where I could work on this project for years, but it's not so open that it is overwhelming. I will add more as I make them.

Intro

My name is Tim Daniels.

I grew up in a very small town in MA.
I currently go to Maine College of Art.
I am a printmaking major.
I am in my junior year.
I like to do different stuff outside printmaking too.
Such as design, sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, and some writing(but that I don't really share)
But I like making prints of stuff I do outside of printmaking the most.

Right now I am just looking for a way to network(I hate that word, but I don't know any better word to describe it) with other people who might have opinions about my work, and as a way to meet people who could give me help finding a job when I graduate. I feel like I am still really new to the concepts of printmaking but that I am picking up on them pretty quickly.

So I'll post some work, on my next post which will be VERY SHORTLY (like an hour or two to scan in the work)
